March :: Saturday 30th
Bryce is delighted to guide what will be a very comprehensive tour covering many aspects of the construction and the history of this amazing fortress.
Commencing at La Puerta de La Reina (Queens Gate) we will make our way to Fronts 9-10.
Then down to what is left of the original Queen Annes Fort constructed by the British soon after their arrival of 1708 at the beginning of the reign of King George 1st.
Here we find the viewpoint above Clot de la Mola with its wonderful views over the entrance to the Harbour.
Then we venture below ground through the Mine past all storerooms and living quarters before surfacing and heading to the Hornabeque. A lot to talk about here with a viewpoint where we will look across to the Lazareto and Sant Felipe.
This will also be a rest and comfort stop.
Then passing the decanting pools and water reservoir we make our way underground once more to the Loop Hole Gallery, the star of the underground construction. Then up to the surface again by way of the "OMG" steps to emerge adjacent to the Torre Princesa.
Have you seen the Queens Bathing pool before? Well this will be next and before we make our way up past the ghostly remains of the Penitentiary with a few stories to be told here!
Next we will see the Queens Powder Room before finally making our way up to the Vickers Guns. Manufactured on Tyneside in 1930 to 1934 and installed here in 1934/36
We will inspect the underground machinery and describe the workings of these 38.1 cm (15inch) calibre guns which could fire a distance of 35 kms and be capable of penetrating 18inch steel plating
Above ground once more we will finish by inspecting inside the turrets.
With a final “pit stop” here before making our way back to the cars at the end of an approximately 3 hrs tour.
The tour will start with a general preamble before we cross the moats and before entering the Queens Gate.
We have a special price of entry for Menorca Britannia members-
Just 5.00 €uros per person for members
payable when we meet in the car park.
We will start the tour at 10.00 am.
This is an advance notice to enable members priority booking.
