letter to the chairman and founder members of the newly formed collingwood society.

January 7th. 2013

Esteemed founder Chairman and Members of the Collingwood Society,

We the President and Members of the Asociación Menorca Britannia are delighted to hear of your newly formed Society. Long overdue, but it is gratifying that this great naval hero Vice Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood is at last being recognised. Especially by a special society formed and based in his place of birth and in the area that meant so much to him during his life.

Here in Menorca we are very aware that during the last 5 years of his life, 1805-1810, and based in the Port of Mahón, he became a hero of the Spanish and a significant Ambassador of the British throughout the Mediterranean.

Although the Aims and Objectives of our Asociación far exceed the British legacy on Menorca we were proud to organise the Collingwood Commemoration in March of 2010 which followed the Collingwood Festival on Tyneside.

The bronze likeness of Collingwood especially commissioned by our Asociación for that anniversary was placed and inaugurated on Isla Del Rey in the middle of the harbour overlooking his shore side home and adjacent to where his ship the Ville de Paris would have been moored. We are pleased to have released the copyright for this bust to Morpeth and it is fitting that they have managed to raise the finance for a copy to be placed near the home he enjoyed with his wife and daughters on those few weeks when he was on leave. We hope to see you all at the inauguration of this on March 7th.

We would like members of the Collingwood Society to feel they are affiliated honorary members of Menorca Britannia. In this respect, whenever you are on Menorca, we invite you to any events that we may be holding at that time, on equal terms to those of members of the Asociación Menorca Britannia, when you will be assured of a warm welcome. We hope, reciprocally, that our members and especially from the North East of England can be similarly treated.

We wish you all good fortune with the Society which we are sure will be a great success.

Kind regards

Bryce Lyons
